Renewing Anglican Worship Working Group (RAWWG)
Conducts a
Church Depot Day
November 21, 2009

Diocesan-wide consultations showed that there is a thirst in this diocese for renewing Anglican worship. Renewing Anglican Worship was named as one of the priorities in the Diocesan Strategic Plan - Plan 2018. In March 2009 a new diocesan group called Renewing Anglican Worship Working Group ( RAWWG for short) was formed to help the diocese respond to this priority.

A Church Depot Day
The group conducted a Church Depot Day on Nov 21, 2009 called Renewing Anglican Worship: ‘Building vital and faithful worship’ The Church Depot program has been discontinued, in fact the RAWWG Day was the final workshop day in the programs 8 year history. We look forward to being part of Road to 2018 - Working together to strengthen the mission of the church the new diocesan program.

The day started with the presentation of four worship stories from around this diocese. These accounts revealed the diversity of worship practices that already exist in our local area. This opened the way to an exploration of what makes us identifiably Anglican, yet at the same time, invites a variety of expressions.
Over lunch the participants shared stories about their own meaningful worship experiences and discussed what had made them so meaningful.

In the afternoon particpants experienced singing the Pslams in a variety of ways and engaged in movement during worship.

Commitment to Listening:
Before concluding with Eucharist the participants were invited to share with RAWWG some of their dreams and hopes about the renewing of Anglican Worship .
The suggestions received will form the basis of future workshops and projects.

What the participants said:

What a great experience! So different from what I expected it to be. I went expecting a couple of possibly-useful, likely-rather-boring lectures, but it was nothing of the kind! We *experienced* worship together, and I came away bursting with new ideas! Sarah Pridy, St. Stephen the Martyr, Burnaby

For me the Church Depot day on Renewing Anglican Worship was exciting and affirming! Exciting to see that other churches are also working toward worship that is understandable and meaningful to all and affirming to us at St. Dunstan’s that we are indeed moving in the right direction.

What's in a Name?

Why call this group RAWWG – Renewing Anglican Worship Working Group?

The group called together in March 2009 was initially called the Bishop’s Liturgical Commission.
This group requested that it be re-named as Renewing Anglican Worship Working Group: RAWWG.

· This name reflects the diocesan strategic priority, Renewing Anglican Worship.

· The words Working Group suggest that renewing Anglican worship is a work-in-progress, open to testing and trial rather than a finished, perfected work of art.

· The words Working Group emphasize the active and collaborative role this group wishes to maintain in helping congregations and regions achieve the strategic goal.

Interesting Stuff!

John Wesley’s Rules for Singing (1761)

1.Sing all. See that you join with the congregation as frequently as you can. Let
not a slight degree of weakness or weariness hinder you. If it is a cross to you,
take it up and you will find a blessing.

2. Sing lustily, and with a good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half
dead, or half asleep; but lift up your voice with strength. Be no more afraid of
your voice now, nor more ashamed of it being heard, then when you sing the
songs of Satan.

3. Sing modestly. Do not bawl, as to be heard above, or distinct from, the rest of
the congregation, that you may not destroy the harmony; but strive to unite your
voices together, so as to make one clear melodious sound.

4. Sing in time. Whatever time is sung, be sure to keep with it. Do not run before,
not stay behind it; but attend closely to the leading voices, and move therewith
as exactly as you can. And take care you sing not too slow. This drawling way
naturally steals on all who are lazy; and it is high time to drive it out from among
us, and sing all our tunes just as quick as we did at first.

5. Above all, sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at
pleasing Him more than yourself, or any other creature. In order to do this,
attend strictly to the sense of what you sing, and see that your heart is not carried
away with the sound, but offered to God continually; so shall your singing be
such as the Lord will approve of here, and reward when he cometh in the clouds
of heaven.
