Toonies from singing go for suicide prevention
The money that parishes in New Westminster and across Canada gave after singing "Amazing Grace" is going to the establishment of a suicide prevention program.
The Council of the North, with representatives from a dozen dioceses in more remote areas of Canada, decided this spring how the $91,000 raised will be spent. Youth suicide is a serious problem in many northern communities.
Parishes across Canada videotaped themselves singing the hymn, and each participant was asked to contribute a toonie to the council. New West parishes sent about $2,000 through the diocese; other parishes directly donated more, which has not yet been compiled.
