Parish of St. John the Divine, Maple Ridge BC

The Bishop of the Diocese of New Westminster is seeking to appoint a Vicar for the Parish of St John the Divine in the City of Maple Ridge, BC. The Parish is located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples. This position is at 60% time and without term.

St John the Divine’s profile begins with its mission: To worship God; to nurture all God’s people; to reach out to others; to grow in love.

The parishioners spent a considerable time together in two workshops to tell their story (who they were) and cast a vision for the future (who they want to become).  The workshops, presentations to Vestry and feedback sessions all came together to form their parish profile. “Friendly, welcoming and supportive” is how an overwhelming majority of the parish describe themselves.

The Parish has spent considerable time reflecting on the direction in which they wish to move.  While recognizing their current financial limitations, they are cautious to say ‘at present’ when seeking a part-time priest, intimating that as the energy, congregational size and financial capacity increase so to could the time allocated for their priest.

To become what they desire they are looking for their next vicar to possess the following attributes: Vibrant, energetic, encourager, motivator, not complacent

  • Collaborative leader
  • Good communicator
  • Teacher, challenger
  • Spiritual leader comfortable with both traditional and contemporary worship
  • Enthusiastic supporter of outreach
  • Compassionate pastor to all ages
  • Grounded in faith and prayer
  • Sense of humour

While the congregation size has remained stable the average age is increasing, hence the desire for a priest who has the skills to enable growth and vitality and the profile is clear in stating ‘We really want to reach out to young families as well as the diversity of our congregation.’ They also want ‘To see the parish thrive, not just survive.’ While they want to focus on their own ongoing faith development, they want to be more engaged with the community around them, too.

A 10am Eucharist alternates between the Book of Common Prayer and the Book of Alternative Services. Church School has increased from two to three Sundays each month.

St John the Divine’s ministries include a small lay pastoral care team that provides visits to the sick and shut-ins. This includes monthly visits to five care facilities to lead a short ecumenical worship service. There is also a Prayer Chain in which the parish prays for each other and those who have asked their prayers. Outreach projects of various kinds include support of the local Food Bank and PWRDF.

Buildings, including the Church, hall and rectory (which will be available for the next Vicar) are all in good repair.

The profile includes appendices showing actuals for 2016, budget for 2017, parochial statistics for 2016, a historical sketch of the Parish and an overview of the City of Maple Ridge.

The complete Parish Profile and the required Diocesan application form are found as attachments below.

Applications for this position will be received until close of business on Thursday, November 9th, 2017.  Please email your cover letter, application and, if you are not from the Diocese of New Westminster, a letter from your bishop, indicating you are ‘a priest in good standing’ to
