DESCRIPTION:‘Maps always lie – by what is placed on them and what is le
ft out – but maps can also help us see the truths.’ - Adele Finney.\nE
xploring maps helps us understand our histories\; our social\, economic an
d political stories\; where we came from\; and where we are in relationshi
p with each other. At the centre of the Mapping Exercise is a large map of
Canada (called Turtle Island by some First Nations). We’ll learn about
the First Peoples and the waves of settlers in recent centuries\, explore
why early European explorers called Canada an empty land (“terra nullius
”) and consider what that means today. We’ll watch excerpts from the A
nglican Church of Canada’s “Doctrine of Discovery” and hear Indigeno
us voices. Please come to share\, learn\, be challenged and be engaged. Th
e Mapping Exercise was developed by Alongside Hope in answer to the Calls
to Action of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Michael Shapc
ott\, Executive Director of Sorrento Retreat Centre in British Columbia\,
is a trained facilitator and will lead the exercise.\nPlease Register via
link below to help with planning. \n
