WITH PHILIP CLAYTON

In partnership with the West Coast Centre for (r)Evolutionary Theology

TUESDAY, JULY 10 • 7PM • ST. ANDREW'S WESLEY UNITED CHURCH

We feel on our shoulders, and in our hearts, the weight of a planet in crisis. While some of our theologies may not have stood up to the test, the radical Jesus of the Gospels seems to grow increasingly relevant. Why, and in what ways? What would this ancient / future prophet say
to a world in flux?

THOMAS MERTON: ONE FOOT IN THE WILDERNESSS, ONE FOOT IN THE WORLD

WITH JIM FOREST

In partnership with the Thomas Merton Society of Canada

THURSDAY., JULY 12 • 6PM RECEPTION • VST ATRIUM

7PM LECTURE • CHAPEL OF THE EPIPHANY (UBC)

Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk living in solitude, without phone, radio or television, and at the same time, through his writings, correspondence and visitors, a man deeply engaged in the world and its troubles, from racism to war. His books, best-sellers in many languages, continue to be widely read and discussed.

Considering the church's sins in mission and evangelism (the residential schools, the connection between imperialism and mission, etc.), should today's Christians evangelize and be in mission? A post-colonial, post-imperialist, unapologetic apology for Christian witness today.

PLEASE NOTE! This lecture will be live-streamed on VST's Facebook page, with an opportunity for an interactive Q and A session following the lecture itself. Please visit our Facebook page in order to view this lecture at 7pm on Monday, July 16th!
