God’s Poet Amos: A Bible Study on the Book of Amos

Dr. Walter Brueggemann
In the closing session of Eclipsing Empire, Marcus Borg speaks of the need for theological re-education and suggests a study of Amos as a starting place. Living the Questions commissioned Dr. Walter Brueggemann to write such a study. The 6 – 7 week Bible study offers a look at the prophet and addresses the primary themes of the book. The study is a hard copy eight page paper, available free of charge to your parish. Please contact Bettina Gruver at bgruver@vancouver.anglican.ca.

People of God on the Way

The Journey falls into three parts, each divided into six lessons. Any given group could reasonably complete all three series over the course of a year.

Unit 1: FIRST THINGS is a serious but broad study inviting participants to be thoughtful about God, Jesus, the Bible, the Christian Story, the Church and the Anglican communion.

Unit 2:  THE ANGLICAN WAY examines the Anglican identity and character. Topics include: Who are we?, Joining the Family (Baptism), Our Weekly Bread (Eucharist), Prayer and Worship, Every Member Ministry, and ends with the sharing of an agape meal.

Unit 3: THE BIBLE AND INTERPRETATION focuses on a broad look at the Bible as communication, authorship and translation, literary form, historical context, canonical context, and finally, the contemporary context.

All Christians are on a journey, somewhere along the way of coming better to understand God and the ways of God in the hearts of believers, the church and the world. Our starting points are varied, as is our progress along the way. Our hope, and even our experience, is that study of the kind that The Journey offers will nudge and encourage us as we travel.

The Journey is available through the synod office.  Contact Bettina Gruver. A copy of the materials (electronic preferred) is provided without charge.
