MovieNight presents VICTOR VICTORIA

1982 | UK, USA | 132 min.

Director: Blake Edwards Cast: Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Leslie Ann Warren, Alex Karras, John Rhys-Davies

Paris. 1934.

A woman impersonating man impersonating a woman is the hot new stage star...and why not? Anything goes in the City of Lights!   Movie Night welcomes you all to the merry, merry month of May...and what   better way to look ahead to the upcoming Victoria Day holiday than to screen a movie with the audaciously serendipitous title Victor Victoria?

The incomparable Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music) plays Victoria, a talented but struggling singer who can’t get a break. She meets Toddy, a cabaret performer, played by the irrepressible Robert Preston (The Music Man), who takes Victoria under his wing, transforming her into Count Victor, a “man” who performs in drag as a woman and who becomes a Parisian sensation. The always amiable James Garner plays a mob connected Chicago club owner visiting Paris who finds himself attracted to Count Victor’s female stage persona, but also smitten by “Victor” himself (are you with me here?), much to the disgust of his floozy girlfriend (a zany Leslie Ann Warren) and to the confusion of his bodyguard (Alex Karras).

Sharply directed by Blake Edwards (who gave us the Pink Panther series, Days of Wine and Roses and  Darling Lili, among others) and featuring a sparkling Academy Award-winning song score by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse, Victor Victoria is a not only a gender-bending French-flavoured farce, it is also a sumptuous soufflé of style, wit and warmth.

Join us on the first Friday of May for this special presentation, which will be made a little more special by another first-rate introduction by local film critic and Capilano animation history professor Michael van den Bos, who will be returning to Movie NIght to offer us another blend of edutaining behind-the-scenes tidbits, a contextual overview and critical appraisal of Victor Victoria.

Friday, 6 May: The King Room/Library

Michael's introduction to start at 7pm sharp, with the movie to follow immediately afterwards. Tell your friends!
