Movie Night continues its celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial with Monsieur Lazhar, another of this country’s recent cinematic gems!

This 2011 film tells the story of an Algerian immigrant (portrayed by Mohamed Fellag) hired to replace a popular teacher who committed suicide in her classroom at a Montréal grade school. Director Philippe Falardeau (working from his own screenplay, based on a play by Evelyne de la Cheneliére) creates a moving look at how children and adults approach grief, what they are able to learn from each other and what personal tragedy can reveal.
