Monday October 22nd the Rev. Karen Saunders, St. George's, Ft. Langley, had the pleasure of visiting Mrs.Nagra's grade 8 enriched class at the Khalsa School in Surrey to speak to them about Christianity. Part of their social studies curriculum involves learning about other faiths, and Karen was invited to give them a basic talk about what Christians believe, a little Biblical history, and answer their questions about customs and practices. This all came about because her daughter Jenn Duran teaches grade 3 at the school, and had spoken about her mom’s June 24th, 2012, ordination to the diaconate in the staff room!
Karen was delighted to be offered such a wonderful interfaith opportunity, and the chance to forge a small link between the Christian and the Sikh communities. She spoke and showed slides which emphasized the rich variety of Christian worship and practice, while maintaining shared core beliefs.
Karen was made very welcome, and the students asked some good questions. It was wonderful to be told afterwards that one of the students commented to the teacher "It's not so different after all". One couldn't ask for a better response to the talk. And it seems it may become an annual invitation!
