Description:

The Bishop of the Diocese of New Westminster is seeking applications for the position of Rector of the Parish of St Laurence, Coquitlam. This is a full-time, permanent position.

St Laurence describes itself in these words:

  • A core value of our Parish remains fundamentally rooted in the words of St. Laurence, our patron saint, “The people are the treasure of the church.”
  • Our Parish ministries are guided by the Anglican Five Marks of Mission which express our shared commitment to, and understanding of, God’s mandate.
  • We are a progressive and inclusive Church community.
  • We endorse and support an open-minded approach to Christian faith and practice.
  • St Laurence continues to be open to engage in new and innovative ideas, and to share and spread the gospel in ways that reach people at the point of their needs.

Some notable features of the community life include:

  • St Laurence values worship that provides for full lay participation as co-partners (including input to planning and periodic feedback).
  • St Laurence would like to continue to encourage youth involvement and leadership in our service.
  • St Laurence completed a successful merger with the Parish of St Catherine of Alexandria (February 2022).
  • The parish enjoys a strong relationship with Good Shepherd Lutheran.
  • It features an active you th ministry: ignYte
    • "As ignYte, “we desire to create a bravely welcoming community where youth can bring their full selves, create lasting friendships, kindle a joyful faith, and be energized to spread Christ’s love in every part of their lives.”"
  • The parish provides support for parents and families in faith development.
  • St. Laurence sponsors the Tri-City Winter Shelter program one month a year by providing a place for unhoused people to sleep, receive a hot dinner and breakfast and a bagged lunch.
  • They hold an active partnership with Talitha Koum recovery and life skills program for women.
  • They are currently undergoing a "Reno Vision" plan to refresh and renew the current worship space.

Some qualities the parish is seeking in their next rector are:

  • The rector we are looking for will support and help to grow our diverse and inclusive parish.
  • They will see, as evident by the participation weekly of lay persons, our dedication and desire to participate in worship.
  • They will encourage and build on the participation of children and youth.
  • They will value varied liturgy and prayers.
  • They will work cooperatively with the music director and choir to ensure that the congregation continues to have music that inspires us and in which we can participate.
  • The new rector will be supportive of the on-going planning of a Deanery chaplaincy.
  • The people of St. Laurence have a wide variety of skills and gifts. We are looking for a rector who creates an environment that brings out the very best in us by directly participating, mediating, and encouraging others.
