Church of the Holy Spirit, formerly St. John the Evangelist, Whonnock

St. John the Evangelist, Whonnock, is no more, in name - Bishop Michael Ingham consented to the parish's request to be renamed the Church of the Holy Spirit.

The Rev. David Findley-Price, priest-in-charge, said the parish asked for the name change because of constant confusion with another parish on River Road in the same community, St. John's, Maple Ridge.

The parish has been having trouble with its water supply, which has been condemned. Currently, water is trucked in, 1000 gallons at a time. The parish has applied for an Anglican Foundation grant to enable the church either to hook up with a neighbour's well, or to dig a new well.

But first the parish raised over $1,600 for wells in Africa. Half was sent to the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund, and half donated towards a project of the Canadian Feed the Children Organization.

"We felt we should give to others before doing something for ourselves," said Findley-Price.
