Born in Japan, the Reverend Dr. Cyril Powles came to Canada in his youth, undertook studies in Toronto and was ordained in the Diocese of Toronto. Cyril was married to Marjorie and in 1946 they left Canada to serve in Japan for the Anglican Church of Canada. Cyril ministered first in small rural parishes, was heavily involved in the Diocese of Chubu and then at the Anglican Theological College in Tokyo until 1970. On returning to Canada Cyril joined the faculty at Trinity College, Toronto and upon retirement was name Professor Emeritus of Divinity (History).Cyril remained canonically resident in the Diocese of Toronto.

Cyril and Marjorie moved to Vancouver to be closer to family and they both became parishioners at St Mark, Kitsilano.

Marjorie Powles, Cyril's wife of 67 years celebrated her 99th birthday on Sunday, July 28th surrounded by family and friends.

The funeral liturgy for the Reverend Dr Cyril Powles will be at 1:30 pm on Friday, August 9th, at St. Mark's Church, Kitsilano, 1805 Larch Street at West 2nd.
