St. John, Apostle and Evangelist

St. John, Apostle and Evangelist

May 6 - Holy Day

Tomorrow, May 6, we honour St. John the Apostle, a Galilean fisherman who was called with his brother James and followed Jesus to become “a fisher for people.”

John and his brother were so impetuous in their behaviour that Jesus nicknamed them “Boaner’ges” or “Sons of thunder.” Nevertheless, with Peter and James, he was one of the three disciples that Jesus chose to have with him on those occasions when he wanted people he could trust.

Evening Encounter

Evening Encounter

"The Fisher" by Herbert O'Driscoll

It was in late August and the last hour of one of these evenings of late Summer when the sun, low on the horizon, pours in from the gulf, and touches every ripple of the low tide water by Spanish Banks. In that hour there are people who do slow and lazy things and move along the beach.

He was moving in and out of the water in his black shoulder-high fishing leggings. On the beach behind him there was a bucket.

What on earth are we doing?

What on earth are we doing?

by Stephen Rowe

Recently I was speaking to a retired priest. I mentioned the challenges of being clergy in 2022. After the last couple of years of pandemic we are trying to get back to church. I’d mentioned all the emails we get which seem to suggest how we feel and what we need to do to fix our church.

PWRDF matches donations for Ukraine with four other humanitarian responses

PWRDF matches donations for Ukraine with four other humanitarian responses

In the first month of the war in Ukraine, donors gave $360,000 to PWRDF. Recently PWRDF Executive Director Will Postma announced they are taking the same amount from reserves to support humanitarian relief in Myanmar, Iraq, Ethiopia and Syria.

“We are doing so at a time when we are concerned for the people of Ukraine, the loss of peace and so many lives, but also recognize the many other humanitarian crises around the world that need financial support.”
