All Saints - November 1

All Saints - November 1

Principal Feast of the Church

The Festival of All Saints had its origins in the fourth century, when churches in the East began to celebrate “the feast of the martyrs of the whole world” on the Sunday after Pentecost. Several Western churches adopted this festival and kept it on various dates in April or May, but in the early Middle Ages the church of Rome assigned it the much later date of November 1 and broadened the feast to include all the saints. Western Christendom has followed this custom ever since.

The Inn

The Inn

Herbert O'Driscoll

For some reason there are two things indelibly imprinted in my memory, both of them connected with the sea. One is the Admiral Benbow Inn at which, at the turning of a page, I came to in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island when I was about twelve. The other is an image in romantic poetry. The poet Robert Browning speaks of “magic casements opening on the foam of perilous seas in faerie lands forlorn”.

Privileged

Privileged

Art Turnbull

I am a privileged person. I have been born privileged to live in a wonderful prosperous nation. Too many are not. I have shelter and food and purpose combined with so many opportunities. Many have none. I have had an abundance of privileges over the decades in which I have served the church. I have been in the special place of responsibility bestowed by ordination as a priest.
