Welcome to the November 2, 2023 E-NewsAll Saints - Principal Feast, November 1 The All Saints festival of November 1 (it is celebrated within an 'octave' - 8 days of observance) had its origins in the fourth century, when churches in the East began to celebrate “the feast of the martyrs of the whole world” on the Sunday after Pentecost. Several Western churches adopted this festival and kept it on various dates in April or May, but in the early Middle Ages the church of Rome assigned it the much later date of November first and broadened the feast to include all the saints. Western Christendom has followed this custom ever since. For more infomation visit: http://vancouver.anglican.ca/blog/all-saints-november-1--12720

HOLDING THE CONTRADICTIONS LIGHTLYLast part of a three-part series on Seniors’ Downsizing by Hannah Main-van der Kamp Several months after moving from our much-loved spacious home in a semi-rural location, we thought it might be emotionally safe to return there to visit with neighbours. We had lived there for so many years. It had been painful but necessary to leave. We thought we had detached ourselves sufficiently.

A Welcoming Place of Worship for 150 yearsNovember 18-19, 2023 – 150th Anniversary Celebration for St. Thomas’, Chilliwack Chilliwack’s St. Thomas' Anglican Church, celebrating its 150th birthday in 2023, began unofficially as St. Mark’s in the gold rush town of Port Douglas at the northern tip of Harrison Lake. Completed by Royal Engineers in 1859, a few short years later, the gold rush route was changed, and Port Douglas became a ghost town. The abandoned St. Mark’s was offered to the new community of Chilliwack, seventy miles south, provided that the building could be moved. The retreat and practices will be facilitated by Lorie Martin and others. How do contemplatives engage the world when forest fires, floods, and political uproar are happening in our own backyards? How do we stand in contemplative wisdom and be present in depth to the beauty and suffering inherent to the web of life on this blue-green planet?
