“…your identity is bigger than just you.”Ray Aldred’s opening line from his recent book, “Our Home and Treaty Land.” Cynthia Llewellyn, OM, ODNW would have smiled hearing those words. She was one of the early leaders in the Diocese of New Westminster working for social equality and Indigenous justice issues. Cynthia was engaged all through her life on projects bigger than she was, including the 127 Society for Housing. Her support of these issues and her volunteer work resulted in being awarded the Anglican Award of Merit in 2001. And yet there was another part of her life yet to be discovered. The Sheer SilenceStephen Rowe When clergy of the Diocese of New Westminster met on Retreat at Loon Lake recently there was a moment of sheer silence. It doesn’t happen very often. It was on the first day and there was no wind, no birds singing and for a few moments there was total silence as I stood by the lakeside.

Imagining the Possibility of Peaceful CoexistenceThe Role of Compassionate Listening by Kathleen Coyne On October 7, the world woke to yet another sharp reminder of the enduring legacy of hate; this time through unspeakable violence against civilians and the beginning of a bombardment of revenge also disproportionately impacting civilians, especially children. Across the ValleyHerbert O'Driscoll Does the name Rabindrinath Tagore mean anything to you? He was an Anglo Indian poet in the early years of the last century. He was already well established when I was a small boy and I became aware of him only by the fact that I had a wonderful storyteller in my life at exactly the right age; ten years old or so. A Welcoming Place of Worship for 150 yearsNovember 18-19, 2023 – 150th Anniversary Celebration for St. Thomas’, Chilliwack Chilliwack’s St. Thomas' Anglican Church, celebrating its 150th birthday in 2023, began unofficially as St. Mark’s in the gold rush town of Port Douglas at the northern tip of Harrison Lake. Completed by Royal Engineers in 1859, a few short years later, the gold rush route was changed, and Port Douglas became a ghost town. The abandoned St. Mark’s was offered to the new community of Chilliwack, seventy miles south, provided that the building could be moved. The Web of LifeNovember 20-23 at Loon Lake Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge, BC With teacher Heather Ruce and special online appearance with Cynthia Bourgeault to help us unpack this incredibly important topic. The retreat and practices will be facilitated by Lorie Martin and others. How do contemplatives engage the world when forest fires, floods, and political uproar are happening in our own backyards? How do we stand in contemplative wisdom and be present in depth to the beauty and suffering inherent to the web of life on this blue-green planet?
