On March 25th and 26th, Winnipeg singer-songwriter, Jaylene Johnson and Nashville, guitarist, songwriter, producer, Jim Kimball were in Vancouver to record their song, “Hope.”

Jaylene had entered the song in the National Church’s Marks of Mission songwriting contest in the fall of 2011 and in late December, 2011, it was decided by a trio of judges assembled from across the country that Hope was the outstanding submission. The judges were also confident that wide distribution of this song throughout the church and beyond would be an excellent vehicle for promoting the Marks of Mission.
Lisa Barry, Senior Producer for Anglican Video, Communications and Information Resources with Bev Murphy, Senior Manager, Communications and Information Resources are the prin

cipal National Church representatives responsible for the overall Marks of Mission awareness promotion and Lisa attended the recording sessions. Joining Lisa were Anglican Video Production Manager, Becky Boucher and Videographer, Scott Brown. The Anglican Video team were in Vancouver to gather film footage of the recording process for a documentary film and music video.
The basic instrumental tracks were recorded at Blue Wave Studio in Mt. Pleasant, produced by Randy Murray the Diocese of New Westminster’s Communications Officer and engineered and co-produced by talented Vancouver, musician, producer, composer and recording engineer, Tony Marriott.
An all-star line-up of musicians played on the track including: Tony on bass, Jim Kimball, acoustic guitars (Jim is a regular member of Reba McEntire’s touring band and is a much in-demand Nashville session musician), Randall Stoll, drums, Peter Allen, piano (Peter also assisted Randy with the choral arrangements), David Sinclair, electric guitar and Mike Sanyshyn, violin.
Jaylene was in excellent voice and what gave the session an extra dimension was the presence of her co-writer, Jim Kimball, whose experience and sensitive direction helped produce the best possible performance from Jaylene.
The following day it was off to Christ Church Cathedral a

nd a recording session with the Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir. GNVGC Director of Music, Gail Suderman did an outstanding job preparing the choir to record their backing vocal tracks on the song. The session went smoothly and the results sound great.
Joining the GNVGC for some singing on the track were Jaylene’s friends, recording artists, Timothy Langley and Brandon Foreman of the Victoria-based Indie band Santa Clara and West Van. singer-songwriter, Laurell Barker.
As of this writing, in late March, there are still a few things to be recorded and then Randy and Tony will edit, mix and master the tracks and have the completed song ready for Anglican Video’s production of the music video tentatively scheduled for release in the late summer of 2012.
Jaylene is a member of the St. Benedict’s Table community that worship at All Saints, Anglican Church in Winnipeg. Along with her music career, Jaylene teaches and she is on staff at St. Benedict’s Table as Ministry Coordinator.

An encouraging facet of this process is that it brought together representatives of the Diocese of Rupertsland, the Diocese of New Westminster and General Synod professional staff working together on an exciting project for the National Church.
