On June 3rd, 2012, the Parish of St. David, Delta produced the only registered Big Jubilee Lunch held in Canada.
One of the more memorable moments of that event was the opening of  St. David's Jubilee Community Garden. Abbeyfield House resident Amy Braim (aged 96), and Devon Matson, (aged 8) who is a member of St. David's Sunday School, planted a Queen Elizabeth 2 Rose (current bloom is the image on the right) as an iconic reminder of the cooperation between the parish and the community.
By mid-summer, the garden is doing very well with raised garden boxes producing lettuce and radishes as well as snap peas (image above) in the Sunday School's Kingdom Kidzone plot and a bounty of nasturtiums, peas, swiss chard and runner beans.
Later harvesting is earmarked for the parish corn roast in September. In the words of St. David's Incumbent, The Reverend Paul Woehrle: “You know when an idea comes along that is so full… of good things. No one could have anticipated all of the good that would come out of what a number of people over the years had been thinking and talking about – a community garden”. Now it is a reality, and appropriately named in this year of our sovereign’s Diamond Jubilee.
