On the afternoon of Saturday, October 1st people gathered to savour the last pies of the renowned “pie ladies” of St. Anne’s, Steveston. After almost 25 years of making and selling pies far and wide, the ladies felt it was time to hang up their aprons and put away their rolling pins for good. Pie ladies past and present, parishioners and devoted customers gathered to thank these women for their wonderful ministry.
Who would have thought that a project that was started to help pay off the mortgage of a newly configured church would still be raising money all these years later! In the late 1980’s St. Anne’s reconfigured it’s worship space and there was a mortgage to pay off. It was suggested to Mildred Hingston that the women of the church might make pies to help raise funds. And raise funds they did! After the mortgage was paid off the pie ladies provided funds for some major purchases around the church.
These women and their culinary gifts will be dearly missed, by parishioners of St. Anne’s as well as the many customers from the surrounding community of Richmond.
