Environmental and social justice

The Diocesan Justice and Peace Unit supports local and global efforts for environmental and social justice. They've been especially involved in responsible resource development, Canadian mining practices, pipelines in British Columbia, and the Metro Vancouver Alliance. Contact Reverend Margaret Marquardt for details.

What We Do

Organizations and Initiatives the Justice Unit is Engaged With
Metro Vancouver Alliance

Metro Vancouver Alliance (MVA) is an organization of labour, faith non-profits, and educational organizations working together for the common good. The diocesan Justice and Peace Unit is a member  of MVA, and the diocese is a Sponsoring Organization. MVA is part of a worldwide, broad-based alliance that has existed for over 85 years.
MVA 2026 focus issues are: affordable and co-op housing, and local environmental work that could be initiated by the Vancouver Municipal Council.

A MVA Delegate’s Assembly is coming up in June 2026, leading to a Vancouver Municipal Assembly in September. To find out more about this non-partisan Alliance and upcoming events, click here

You can get in touch with the Chair of the Unit,

The Rev. Margaret Marquardt through the diocesan office if you would want to know more or have your parish join. Margaret said she’s always glad to meet up for coffee somewhere in East Vancouver.

Peace Train

The first Peace Train was from Vancouver to Ottawa two years ago, another in fall 2025, and one coming up this autumn 2026.
In addition to meeting people at stops across the country, the large focus of the Peace Train is of Canada once again having a Peace Centre. That’s the focus!
The reality of people taking a journey on a train, and meeting people across the country, has been an eye-opener for many in rethinking how Canada could participate in the world with a Centre of Excellence in Peace.
Two members of our diocese have participated in the Peace Train and in meeting with Members of Parliament from all political parties.

If you’d like further information about the Peace Train this autumn and the
Peace Centre visit the Peace Train website or reach out to the Rev. Margaret Marquardt, chair of the Justice and Peace Unit through the diocese for more information.
