Originally premiered in 1787 in major cities across Europe, “The Seven Last Words of Christ,” was written for the Lenten practice of reflecting on each of the last sayings of Jesus leading up to his cruxifixion. Each of the sayings receives its own musical meditation in this work, along with an introductory meditation at its open and an earthquake meditation at its close, for a total of nine movements. In the years after its initial publication, Haydn adapted the original orchestral composition for string quartet, choral, and piano versions. This performance, under the direction of Edette Gagne and produced by Tony Lee, features soloists Catherine Crouch, Maria Golas, Steve Froese, and Kevin Burke, and the Harmonia String Ensemble.
