The Tsleil-waututh Nation is sponsoring an event for the public to learn more about plans to dredge Burrard Inlet. The proposed dredging beneath the Second Narrows Bridge would disturb the seafloor and disturb restoration work, and possibly release toxic chemicals and materials currently undisturbed on the seabed.
Why dredge under the bridge?
The Vancouver Port Authority says dredging is needed:
“so ships including Aframax-class tankers filling up at the Trans Mountain's Westridge Marine Terminal could, in the words of the authority, "load more fully."
Dredging to get more oil into tankers into the inlet could disrupt years of careful healing and restoration work.
In recent years eel grass has returned, herring have come back to spawn, salmon, seals and whales have returned in great numbers as witnessed by Orcas visiting False Creek in 2024 and Grey whales in 2025.
Bring your friends, neighbours, community, parents, children and come together to learn about this project, with opportunities for prayer and action.
