If laughter is the best medicine, Diocesan Synod delegates got an extra dose on the first morning. The Ministry Assessment Process presentation was on the agenda.

As the lights dimmed a talking head filled the video screens in the Capilano College Sportsplex in late May.

‘Archdeacon’ Percival Hogmany (aka actor and Cathedral parishioner Christopher Gaze) gave his perspective on how to rearrange the diocese at Diocesan Synod in May.

The Venerable Dr. Percival Hogmany stated his mission: to brief Synod delegates on the mandate of the Commission for Restructuring, Renovation, Re-alignment, Re-tasking, and Rephrasing. The presentation was tongue-in-cheekily titled "Winning the Church Game".

What followed was all in good fun. The laughter grew louder as many recognized Bard on the Beach founder and Christ Church Cathedral parishioner Christopher Gaze, brilliantly impersonating the "archdeacon from hell."

As the "Archdeacon" grew even more off the wall a voice rang out: "Stop! Please pause that!" It was the Rev. Sharon Salomons, Rector of All Saints, Mission, who reminded Mr. Hogmany that the real Ministry Assessment Process is not about winners and losers. She then dismissed the nasty visitor in the diocese's first video exorcism.

Mike Burpee, chair of the MAP Task force commented: " By humorously dramatizing MAP's diametric opposite, we emphasized that this process is about expanding our ministry, not rationalizing it. Synod's happy reaction to this presentation leads me to believe we succeeded."

"Winning the Church Game" was produced by Communications Committee members Rod Mackin, Randy Murray and Jane Osler. DVD copies are available for parishes from Diocesan Program Coordinator Bettina Gruver at 604 684-6306 ext. 226, or bgruver@vancouver.anglican.ca.
