St. John's, Port Moody, is looking for our next Music Director!

The Music Director—working in conjunction with the Priest—oversees all musical aspects of worship for regular and special services, including the conducting/accompanying of an adult choir for the 10am Sunday service. They are a key member of our ministry team who—by their teaching, leading, encouraging and fostering growth in Christ—supports the parish in our giving glory to God through music.

We are seeking:

  • A skilled keyboard musician. Competence with other instruments and strong vocal ability is an asset.
  • Experience in leading and teaching modern and traditional forms of musical worship.
  • An ability to form, rehearse and direct a choir.
  • Skills in music selection and arranging; a substantial understanding of chord identification structure (to provide weekly guitar scores for hymns and other service music).
  • A strong, innovative, and organized leader who can nurture musical talents at the parish and develop new musical initiatives.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills; comfortable with interacting with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • An ability to clearly articulate your spirituality and faith, as well as how your role would support others’ faith development. A knowledge and appreciation of Anglican and/or Lutheran faith and liturgy is an asset.
  • A Bachelor of Music degree, or equivalent qualifications and experience.

 Key ongoing responsibilities of the position include:

  • Select music for all worship services, in consultation with the Priest and volunteer musicians/vocalists, from Anglican and Lutheran hymnals and other licensed and approved sources. Provide music information for weekly bulletins.
  • Lead music for congregation and choir at weekly 10am Sunday worship and other special services.
  • Teach the congregation new hymns and provide introductions to new music.
  • Schedule, prepare, and lead weekly choir rehearsals.
  • Arrange for capable substitute musicians; and coordinate, train, and support volunteer musicians.
  • Develop and maintain the music library; oversee care of sound system, organ, keyboard and other music-related equipment and supplies. Arrange for purchase of necessary music licensing.
  • Prepare an annual budget and an annual report.

This is a part-time contract position involving an average of 10 hours per week, with 6 weeks of paid holiday time (to include 6 Sundays). In addition to Sundays, there are 5 other major liturgical festival days during the year where attendance is necessary. Additional unpaid time away from the parish may be arranged in consultation with the Priest and Wardens. Monthly remuneration will be in the range of  $900-$1200 (rate commensurate with skills and experience). Honorariums of $200 per service are offered for funerals, weddings, and additional worship services.    

Initial one year agreement (renewable), with a 3 month probationary period. All staff must comply with diocesan screening requirements, including submitting at time of hire a current Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector search obtained within the last 12 months.
